Westerwolde lies in the eastern part of Groningen, adjacent to the German border. It is a rural environment with more forest than you would suspect. I like it there, wide areas of agriculture are mixed with forests and fields of heather. The local villages are smalle and picturesque. Especially worth visiting is Bourtange. This fortification shows the defenses used about 400 years ago. On an assignment to shoot pictures of this fortification I came along the hamlet Smeerling. Smeerling has a protected status and consists of a couple of farms close to the Ruiten A, a small stream. This meandering stream was reconstructed by the local forestry in order to let it stream as it would naturally. Driving through Smeerling I saw a potential for a sunrise image. So decision taken I would have to come back at sunrise.
